2008 Hydrogen Booster Rally
The 2008 Hydrogen Booster Rally was the first
of its kind anywhere and took place from Maryland
to the Florida Keys and back starting April 17,
2008. Larry Jarboe, the Commissioner of St. Mary's
County in Maryland organized the 2008 Hydrogen
Booster Rally that included three drivers with
one passenger each.

Mr. Jarboe was in a 1982 diesel Volkswagen Rabbit
truck, geared down and with a Boyce booster in
the back. Bob Boyce drove a Toyota Prius using
a 100-cell HHO generator that he had created.
And, Dustin P. was driving a mid-1980's Olds Cutlass
with using a Smack's booster.
The VW truck received 43 mpg both before an after
the installation of the Boyce booster, but it
was carrying 500-pounds more weight and was driving
10 mph faster after installing the hydrogen on
demand unit. The Toyota Prius, which normally
gets between 42 - 45 mpg achieve 60 - 64 mpg with
the Boyce booster installed.
The Oldsmobile Cutlass regularly gets 18 mpg,
and was able to achieve 24 mpg with the Smack's
booster installed. Some of the owners of hydrogen
fuel injection devices choose to install them
on pre-1996 cars so that they don't have to deal
with issues surrounding the onboard computer.
According to Boyce, the ECU on his Toyota Prius
was able to "learn" about the oxyhydrogen
mix being injected into the cylinders and make
adjustments accordingly. There was some manual
intervention that was needed however such as when
the engine idle cutoff feature of the Prius kicked
in. But, otherwise Boyce enjoyed the gas saving
on the 1,200 mile one-way trip to the Keys.
There is a good series of videos
about the 2008 Hydrogen Booster Rally that chronicles
this event and the mileage each received from
their respective hydrogen boosters. Larry Jarboe,
Bob Boyce and Dustin P. can be found on some of
the water car
groups and of course other places on the web
as well.
